The History of Cane Corsos

The history of this gigantic dog breed can be traced back to the famous Molosser dogs of the ancient Roman Empire. In Latin, the Cane Corsos is referred to as “Cohors” which translates to “Protector” or “Guardian.” The breed is closely related to the Neapolitan Mastiff which is also native to ancient Italy. Apart from the Neapolitan Mastiff, the Cane Corso has also been compared to America’s very own Black and Tan Coonhound which has the same build but less muscle. Originally, the Cane Corsos were mainly war dogs used to fight off all kinds of wild beasts like bears and boar thanks to their gigantic build and ruthless nature. During the mezzadria era, the breed was largely used on agricultural fields as a hunter dog for large game. It was also used for crop protection and shepherding animals to slaughterhouses and market places.

After the mezzadria system collapsed due to agricultural advancements, the need for guard dogs in Italy decreased significantly. As a result, the Italian Mastiff nearly became extinct during the mid-20th century. A famous researcher and dog enthusiast by the name of Dr. Paolo Breber is credited with salvaging the breed from extinction when he started the Società Amatori Cane Corso breed society in 1976. Through selective breeding using superior Cane Corso bloodline, Dr. Paolo Breber was able to ensure the survival of the Italian Mastiff that we know today. Soon after the revival, the breed was introduced into the United States and has since gained a lot of popularity across the country. The breed is recognized by several world-famous dog organizations around the world including the American Kennel Club (2010), the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (2007), and the Ente Nazionale Della Cinofilia Italiana (1994).

Characteristics and Physical Attributes of the Cane Corso

Cane Corsos are large powerful dogs with a muscular body, a fierce appearance, and a short sturdy muzzle. Male Corso Canes can range between 23 and 28 inches in height while females range between 23 and 26 inches. Male can weigh between 45 and 50 kilograms while females weigh between 40 and 50 kilograms. The breed has a large imposing head, a flat rectangular muzzle, almond-shaped eyes, and a short coat. The most common coat colors are black and fawn. However, genetic pigment dilution has led to the development of other colors including shades of grey, red, and shades of fawn. The breed’s life expectancy is between 19 and 12 years according to the AKC. However, a small percentage of the dogs do manage to live past 12 years.

How Much does a Cane Corso Puppy Cost?

The price tag for Cane Corso puppies for sale will depend on several factors namely the puppy’s lineage or bloodline, size, and level of training. On average, a puppy costs between $1500 and $2500. Puppies that come from a superior bloodline can sell from $2500 to $8500. Due to its large size and active lifestyle, the breed is also quite expensive to maintain when compared to other smaller dog breeds. However, this is not such a steep price to pay especially with all the benefits that come with having a friendly but fearless guard dog protecting your family and your home.

Is the Cane Corso a Good Family Dog?

According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), Cane Corsos are known to be affectionate, intelligent, and majestic dogs. Through proper socialization, the mastiff can also learn to be calm and friendly in the presence of strangers. However, they can be very protective of their owners and will instinctively know when to be friendly and when to defend their own. Apart from being fearless, the breed also has a great sense of adventure and can prove to be the perfect companion for people who love hiking, running, or going for long walks. The Italian Mastiffs are quite easy to train and tend to be very obedient and loyal which makes them fantastic family pets.

Are Cane Corso Dogs Dangerous?

With proper training, socialization, and management, your Corso Cane puppy should turn out to be a confident and well-mannered family dog. Due to its athleticism and high energy levels, the breed requires regular exercise and can become irritable and destructive due to lack of exercise. This can also happen if the dog is left alone without human companionship or interaction for too long. However, there is no hiding that the breed has a strong temperament and can come off as aggressive. Without proper breeding and socialization, they are potentially dangerous to other animals as well as small children and old people. This is why you need to select a recognized breeder when looking for Cane Corso puppies for sale.

Factors to Consider when Choosing a Cane Corso Puppy

Choosing Cane Corso puppies for sale can be an easy task when dealing with an experienced breeder. He or she will most certainly help pair you up with a puppy or puppies that fit your needs. Below are some of the factors that most buyers look into when choosing a Corso Cane puppy:

General Appearance

Although most Cane Corso puppies come from top bloodlines that promise to produce only superior offsprings, it is important to ensure that you choose a puppy with a perfect appearance. This means a well-defined rectangular body with strong bones and muscles.

Coat and Eye Color

There are several color preferences to choose from when buying a Cane Corso puppy. More often than not the coat color of the puppy you choose will most likely match the eye color of your dog. Blank, red, and fawn are the two most preferred coat colors.

Ear Cropping

Ear cropping is a very common procedure that is practiced by Cane Corso breeders. The procedure takes place when the puppies are 8 to 15 weeks old. Traditionally, the cropping was done to protect the dogs from ear injuries during hunting. Today, the procedure is done for both health and cosmetic purposes.

For starters, cropping the ears of a Cane Corso gives it a more intimidating look which is considered the dog’s first line of defense. What’s more, ear cropping protects your dog from potential ear injuries and infections which might save you a lot of money and time. It is therefore advisable to pick a puppy with cropped years. However, you can choose to go the other way depending on how you feel about ear cropping.

Tail Docking

Just like ear cropping, tail docking was originally done to prevent injury during hunting. Today, it has become a standard procedure as stipulated by the American Kennel Club (AKC). All Corso Cane puppies should undergo tail docking before they are one week old.

Level of Training

Most Cane Corso breeders have training programs for puppies that help them to socialize and learn to obey orders. Buying a puppy is that has already started training is an added advantage since you don’t have to start from scratch.

Chipping

If your breeder offers chipping services, go for it. Since the breed is adventurous by nature, having your puppy chipped might come in handy in case it wanders out of sight and gets lost.

Price Range for Cane Corso puppies

A higher price range might point to a superior breed. As such, it’s important to carefully analyze the prices to avoid buying mediocre breeds.

Helpful Tips for New Cane Corso Owners
